COMMUNITY INTEGRATION

Community Integration means that people decide where they live, work, learn, socialize, and what supportive services they receive. PAI’s Community Integration work involves three key concerns:

(1) Protection Against Involuntary Treatment;

(2) Access to Supportive Services Based on Informed Consent; and

(3) Enforcement of Anti-Discrimination Statutes.

Access to Supportive Services

PAI staff provide information about and represent individuals to obtain:

  • Peer Support Services;
  • Subsidized Housing;
  • Medicaid (Medi-Cal) Entitlement Program Services (For example, Therapeutic Behavioral Services (TBS), PAI Publication # 5185.01; Rehabilitative Mental Health Services, PAI Publication # 5185.01);
  • Personal Care Services and Protective Supervision under the In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS); and
  • Educational, Vocational and Recreational programs.
  • PAI may assist individuals who live in unnecessarily segregated facilities such as: (1) State Mental Hospitals; (2) Locked, Private Psychiatric Facilities; (3) Nursing Homes; (4) Board and Care Homes; and (5) Homeless Shelters.

    Personal Autonomy & Freedom from Discrimination

    PAI staff also provide information about and represent individuals to enforce informed consent rights and anti-discrimination statutes, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Amendments Act. These enforcement efforts help people with psychiatric disabilities to have equal opportunity to housing, public services and public accommodations, employment, education and transportation.
