Community Integration means that people decide where they live, work, learn, socialize, and what supportive services they receive. PAI’s Community Integration work involves three key concerns:
(1) Protection Against Involuntary Treatment;
(2) Access to Supportive Services Based on Informed Consent; and
(3) Enforcement of Anti-Discrimination Statutes.
PAI staff provide information about and represent individuals to obtain:
PAI may assist individuals who live in unnecessarily segregated facilities such as: (1) State Mental Hospitals; (2) Locked, Private Psychiatric Facilities; (3) Nursing Homes; (4) Board and Care Homes; and (5) Homeless Shelters.
PAI staff also provide information about and represent individuals to enforce informed consent rights and anti-discrimination statutes, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Amendments Act. These enforcement efforts help people with psychiatric disabilities to have equal opportunity to housing, public services and public accommodations, employment, education and transportation.
